I'm not following this thread closely, but just a quick word about the openssl shipped with SmartOS, it is specifically designed to be hidden:

and so there will be no builtin match for it at all, which may be different to the context for this thread, but yes it's true that on the whole we compile specifically with PREFER_PKGSRC=yes even for things that are available in the base system, so that the binaries are portable to a wider range of releases as well as other illumos distributions.
