I tried the cross-build route (from macOS/arm64), but as I recall, I ended up spending numerous hours going pretty far down the rabbit hole with the web of dependencies before finally giving up on it.

Given that binary builds for sgimips or mipseb are no longer supported by pkgsrc, and that R4000 and up are 64-bit CPUs, I have wondered about the feasibility of using the available mips64eb packages. I noticed that there were various 64-bit kernel configurations in the sgimips tree, but it was unclear to what degree any of those were expected to work on systems like the Indy and Challenge S. I tried to build a 64-bit configuration for the Challenge S last year, but it was ultimately not successful in getting it to work.

I've not yet had any success building/booting 64 bit userland/kernels
for the o2/indy. :( I haven't gotten to that yet.

What's needed to get supported pkgsrc 32 bit sgimips stuff going?
